Our community offers some of the best housing, schools, parks, and shopping in the City of New York. However, our most important resource is our residents. Our community has a spirited history of activism, volunteerism and philanthropy. The Community Board represents the interests and concerns of the local community on issues ranging from land use, education, housing, parks, public safety, libraries, the elderly, youth, environment and sanitation, traffic, and economic development. Some of the major issues that Board 8 has addressed in recent years include: the creation of a comprehensive vision for the community through a 197-a Plan; the rezoning of various areas to prevent development that is out of character with a local area; amendments to the Greenbelt or Special Natural Area District provisions; and the economic revitalization of West 230th Street and Broadway.
The Community Board is made up of volunteers appointed by the Borough President in consultation with the City Council members from the district. Our monthly meetings are open to the public, so we welcome your attendance and participation. The Community Board is here to serve you, so please contact us if we can be of assistance.
We have put together lots of useful information - for your health, enjoyment, education and more! Please check back often to read the minutes to our monthly public board meetings, or to learn about fun and interesting events happening in the neighborhood.

| CB 8 NEWS - Responses to Bronx Community Board No. 8 Questions (sent 9/19/06) | |
Please note that questions below are verbatim of questions submitted for response.
Gifted and Talented “Why are there no Gifted & Talented programs? What reasons outweigh the benefits of such a program? ”
The Department of Education (“DOE”) currently provides Schoolwide Enrichment Model (“SEM”) Gifted and Talented programs in the Riverdale community. As part of our launch of additional Gifted and Talented programs throughout the city, the DOE added 6 SEM programs to District 10 for the 2005-2006 academic year. The opening of many SEM programs demonstrates our commitment to providing all students who either excel academically or who have a talent or interest in a specific content to develop in those areas. SEM programs allow schools to have more flexible structures. Schools can create programs that are more targeted to their students’ needs. | |
